Why This Day Exists

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory holiday since 2021 that was created in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action 80. It shares its date with Orange Shirt Day, which has been observed since 2013 and was started by residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad, whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at residential school. Together they honour survivors, their families and communities, and keep the history of residential schools part of the work of reconciliation.
